beginnerLegs · Quads, glutes, core · Kettlebell or dumbbell
A friendly introduction to squat mechanics, great for beginners or as a warm-up.
How to do it
- Hold a kettlebell vertically against your chest with both hands.
- Stand with feet just outside shoulder-width, toes slightly out.
- Squat down between your knees, keeping your chest up and elbows brushing your knees.
- Drive through your feet to return to standing.
Coaching tips
- Let your elbows guide your knees out as you descend.
- Keep the weight close to your body throughout.
- Aim to get your hips below knee level for full depth.
Common mistakes
- Letting the knees cave inward.
- Rounding the upper back to keep the weight close.
- Rising onto the toes instead of staying flat-footed.
